An eventful history
Built in the French Renaissance style, the hotel opened in 1870. Larger and more magnificent than all of its
predecessors, it heralded a new and revolutionary dawn in hotel design.
Impressively, it was the first palace hotel in Lucerne, and its historic faade dates back to 1870. With the
erection of the east wing in 1900 it became the first hotel in Lucerne to incorporate concrete in its fabric.
Despite refurbishment works between 1977 and 1987 much of the original was preserved, including the historically
important lobby, old dining room (the National Hall), staircase and east atrium - all of which date from 1870.
Over the decades, the Grand Hotel National has witnessed a good deal of Lucerne’s history unfold within its walls.
Notable personalities to have paced its corridors include Colonel Maximilian Alphons Pfyffer, a well-connected
Swiss Officer, César Ritz, its former director whose name was later to become known worldwide, and the chef
Auguste Escoffier, a name still on the tip of every gourmet’s tongue.
To establish the RESIDENCE NATIONAL, the hotel’s current owner and architect, Umberto Erculiani, converted some of
the west wing’s former suites into 22 elegant Residences offering every possible comfort.
The hotel itself occupies the east wing and comprises 41 guest rooms and suites.
